Deb Haaland

Member of the Laguna Pueblo and former U.S. Representative (2019 to 2021), she became Secretary of the Interior in 2021, the first Native American Cabinet member. Her appointment symbolized representation, bringing tribal voices into an agency that had long managed tribal land without them.

Before joining the Cabinet, Haaland participated in the DAPL protests at Standing Rock over water and sacred sites. She opposed the Willow Project in Congress. As Secretary she approved a scaled-down version of Willow (3 drill pads instead of 5), which let her influence energy decisions while facing criticism from both the GOP and environmental groups.


Chris Wright

CEO of Liberty Energy, he stated “There is no climate crisis.” In 2024 Trump appointed him Secretary of Energy. Wright accelerated approvals for oil and gas infrastructure including new drilling and LNG export terminals, and reversed about 13 billion dollars in green energy funds citing inefficiency and cost. The result was more fossil fuel production, stronger industry influence, and criticism for slowing the b, raising emissions, and potential conflicts of interest.


This raises several interesting questions :

1. How do such appointments shape public trust and policy fairness ?
2. When does prior activism or industry experience help or hinder impartial leadership ?
3. Can symbolic representation deliver concrete policy outcomes without unacceptable compromises ?
