Coldplay's Sustainable Touring: Greenwashing or Reality?

In 2019, Coldplay announced a commitment to sustainable touring. 2 years later they published their ambitious 12-point plan.
The example is in English to help you practice 😉
The entertainment industry's ecological footprint
The entertainment industry, especially music festivals, has a huge ecological footprint. On average:
- One concert tour = 3,000-10,000 tons of CO2 (flights, trucks, and stage production)
- Hundreds of tons of waste and excessive use of electricity (lights, sound)
Ready-to-use example
In 2019, Coldplay announced a commitment to sustainable touring. 2 years later they published their 12-point plan which included:
- Using solar energy, power bikes, and a kinetic stadium floor to charge show batteries
- Planting one tree per ticket sold
- Selling ethically sourced merchandise
- Providing free drinking water and banning plastic bottles
- Donating 10% of earnings to eco initiatives
These ambitious promises were met with skepticism, seen as potential greenwashing used to boost the image of the band.
Results & Impact
7 million trees planted, most of the goals exceeded, and tour emissions cut by 59%!
Let's reflect on that
To help you remember, here are a few questions you can reflect on and discuss with your friends. This could help you feeling more confident during a colle or when finding a leading question.
- To what extent can large-scale concerts truly be sustainable?
- How can customers distinguish genuine eco initiatives from marketing strategies?
- Why would listening to an artist mean supporting their opinions? (Katy Perry going to space)
