The Oval Office is the formal working space of the U.S. President inside the White House, where key conversations and decisions occur.

In the early 1970s, the U.S. was marked by distrust: the Vietnam War, the Pentagon Papers, and growing concerns about executive overreach.
In June 1972, five men broke into the Democratic National Committee offices in Washington, D.C., aiming to bug phones and steal documents. The burglars were later tied to Nixon’s re-election campaign.
Nixon’s team attempted to block the FBI, mislead investigators, and hide records, turning the cover-up into the main crime.
When the Supreme Court forced the release of recordings from the Oval Office, the so-called “smoking gun” confirmed Nixon’s involvement. Facing near-certain impeachment, Nixon resigned in August 1974.
Investigative reporting by The Washington Post played a central role, showing how the press can hold political leaders accountable.
The Watergate scandal exposed corruption, underlined the need for transparency, and remains a symbol of checks and balances in democracy.
Today, media freedom still faces pressure. Attempts to cut funding to certain outlets and rising financial challenges raise new concerns about the independence of reporting in the U.S. and abroad.

This raises several interesting questions :
- What responsibilities do governments have to protect independent media, and how should they balance this with national security or budget concerns?
- In what ways can financial or political pressures on media organizations shape public perception and democracy?
- What role should education play in teaching future generations about political accountability and media literacy?
