La Grande Barrière de corail : une beauté qui s’efface peu à peu

La Grande Barrière de corail, plus grand récif du monde, subit des épisodes répétés de blanchissement dus à la hausse des températures, mettant en danger la biodiversité et les économies côtières.

The example is in English to help you practice 😉

Coral reefs are among the most diverse ecosystems on Earth, providing shelter, food, and breeding grounds for countless marine species. They protect coastlines from erosion and support local economies through fishing and tourism.

Highly sensitive to environmental changes, reefs are threatened by rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification, pollution, plastic, and industrial fishing.

The Great Barrier Reef, stretching over 344,000 square kilometers off Australia's coast, is the world's largest coral reef system and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is home to more than 1,600 fish species, 133 types of sharks and rays, and six of the seven sea turtle species.

Over the last eight years, the Reef has experienced five widespread bleaching events, becoming more frequent and severe. The most recent occurred in 2025, 2024, and 2022.

The 2024 event coincided with an El Niño year and followed the hottest year on record, making conditions particularly extreme. In 2022, bleaching affected the entire reef despite it being a La Niña summer, which usually brings cooler, wetter conditions.

Coral bleaching occurs when elevated water temperatures cause corals to expel the symbiotic algae living in their tissues, leading to a loss of color and vital energy. This stress response endangers corals and can result in mass mortality if prolonged.

Let's reflect on that

To help you remember, here are a few questions you can reflect on and discuss with your friends. This could help you feeling more confident during a colle or when finding a leading question.

  • How does coral reef degradation affect local communities and biodiversity ?
  • How should governments balance economic development with reef conservation ?
  • How do short-term profits from fishing or coastal projects conflict with long-term environmental protection ?
