In March 2022, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the Parental Rights in Education Act, also known as the “Don’t Say Gay” law. The law prohibits classroom teaching on sexual orientation or gender identity from kindergarten through third grade.

Under DeSantis, Florida has passed laws limiting LGBTQ+ rights, as part of broader culture-war legislation. These include:
- A ban on gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors and restrictions for adults.
- A requirement that restrooms, changing rooms, and public facilities be used based on sex assigned at birth.
- Extensions of the Don’t Say Gay restrictions to older grades in some schools.
Some measures were softened after legal pushback, but many are still enforced in schools.
The Florida Department of Education published in 2023 a list of over 700 books “removed or discontinued” by school districts, sometimes even including Harry Potter.
These restrictions shape how people view LGBTQ+ identities, create pressure on teachers, encourage self-censorship, and make some students feel unwelcome. This can harm their mental health and sense of safety.

DeSantis presents these policies as protecting children and upholding parental rights, while critics argue they restrict freedom and encourage discrimination.
This raises several interesting questions :
