Quand une IA a tenté de se faire des amis à New York
En septembre 2025, la start-up Friend a lancé un assistant IA portable à New York, suscitant enthousiasme et rejet face aux enjeux de vie privée, d’isolement et d’éthique technologique.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has existed since the mid-20th century. It is not new and has long been used in social media algorithms, search engines, and object detection. The major recent change is the rise of generative AI, which creates text, images, or music by learning patterns from data. These tools are now more accessible, as they require no coding knowledge or advanced hardware.

The debate mainly concerns the source material used to train these systems (large datasets), raising ethical and copyright concerns. While Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) remain theoretical goals, AI assistants are increasingly integrated into platforms like WhatsApp or Telegram, sometimes unnecessarily and hard to disable.
In September 2025, the startup Friend launched a wearable AI companion in the form of a pendant necklace priced at $129. The device listens to conversations and provides real-time feedback through a connected app. Similar AI assistants such as Rabbit R1 and Humane’s AI Pin had already failed due to limited real-time interaction and few use cases.

To promote its launch, Friend rolled out one of New York City’s largest subway ad campaigns, with 11,000 car ads, 1,000 platform posters, and 130 urban panels. The campaign, however, faced immediate backlash. Subway riders vandalized the posters with messages like “AI wouldn’t care if you lived or died” and “Go make real friends,” highlighting concerns over privacy and the implications of AI companionship.
This raises several interesting questions :
- To what extent might aggressive marketing of AI companions exploit emotional needs, leading to unhealthy dependence?
- How might AI companions worsen isolation for individuals who already struggle socially?
- How might aggressive marketing campaigns influence consumer behavior, particularly when promoting products that may exploit emotional or psychological vulnerabilities?
- How should schools address the rise of generative AI: by integrating it into learning, adapting teaching methods, or restricting its use to preserve "academic integrity"?
